Dr. Bernd Althusmann, Chairman of the Standing Conference, acknowledged the Adult Education Centres in his welcome address, with the theme of the XIIIth German Adult Education Conference, “Education for All” by saying: “The Adult Education Centres are socially inclusive, they exclude no-one. They connect through shared learning, they don’t ask about origin and status.”
At the same time, Althusmann warned against the hardening of social barriers to participation in continuing education. He said that it is not acceptable that people don’t have the possibility of real participation because they can’t adequately read and write. The Standing Conference will therefore devote more of its energy to the promotion of reading and writing skills. And to this purpose it wants to remain in conversation with the German Adult Education Association.
