Test the digital learning opportunities of the German Adult Education Association, such as the online learning portal ich-will-deutsch-lernen.de, a digital German language course for immigrants, with diverse applications in classroom courses. The language learning app Einstieg Deutsch (entry-level German), an app for refugees available in 9 languages, can be used to gain German language ability quickly. Online since 2004: ich-will-lernen.de, Germany’s largest open learning portal for literacy and basic education. Connected to the learning portal is heimat-rezepte.de, a cooking blog with attractive writing prompts on the topics “cooking” and “home”.

Preparing children for the future with LEGO robots

Preparing children for the future with LEGO robots

LEGO MINDSTORMS provides a simple introduction to programming and mechanics for children. In the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) each year more than 30,000 teams worldwide compete against each other with their robots. That’s how children from 9 to 16 playfully learn to be successful in a team – and much more. In order to make this competition even more accessible to children, the VHS of the Fulda district, together with the Nano- Giants Academy e. V., developed a programme designed with the children so that they can be accompanied while participating in the FLL. The NanoGiants Academy e.V. consists of young adults who participated in the FLL for many years themselves.

Think global – Learn local

Think global – Learn local

We want to use the World Wide Web – with its inexhaustible possibilities for communication, content and tools – for language learning. And so we extended the learning environments of classroom teaching, with things like online travel to Asti or New York … in which our “experts” from around the world, via live web conferencing with students, meet comfortably at home. The added value to the traditional classroom setting, the added value of the platform (ILIAS), the production and the use of videos, and the added value of networking with the VHS Association of Baden-Württemberg is clear.

Digital Storytelling Workshops – New directions in educational work with and for refugees

Digital Storytelling Workshops – New directions in educational work with and for refugees

Last year the VHS Köln tested new digital media learning formats. In Digital Storytelling personal stories are brought together with digital content. The focus is on the skills and not the deficits of refugees. With the help of tutorials the newly arrived migrants and refugees get practical everyday help. Examples from the workshops are presented in the lounge. There are exercises to do together, interviews and short stories.

"Kulturfund"

"Kulturfund"

“Experience culture on the Internet” is the motto of kulturfund.de, an online training offer from the VHS Mönchengladbach. It offers culture lovers a choice of exciting websites throughout Germany. “Live streaming of opera performances, author’s readings, virtual museum tours or exciting cultural games – the possibilities of cultural education on the Internet are huge,” says Marie Batzel, who conceived of kulturfund.de. The site appeals to (potential) VHS clients, but for teachers as well, who can find interesting teaching materials on kulturfund.de.

Adult Education (Young) Professionals Learning Platform“ (AEP-RO)

The European Adult Education (Young) Professionals Learning Platform (AE-PRO www.ae-pro.eu) project has developed an online training programme for adult educators. Under the auspices of the European Association for the Education of Adults, developments in Europe and innovative approaches to adult education are provided. The Adult Education Association of the Saarland conducts a live session in the lounge on the topic “We need to talk – integration beyond language skills.” Gina Ebner (EAEA) and Doris Pack, along with others, discuss how adult education, through foreign language courses, can also contribute to integration.

Courses with Adobe Connect

Courses with Adobe Connect

Three years ago, seven Upper-Bavaria adult education centres, supported by the bvv of the Upper-Bavaria district and the bvv, started their journey to anchor online learning opportunities in their semester programme. The VHS directors and programme managers developed ideas for the implementation of joint webinars with Adobe Connect and qualified course leaders in a joint training venture. From the practical approach of the Upper-Bavaria initiative there arose a model that takes into account the different perspectives and interests of VHS directors and clients from the outset.

From the idea to the course

From the idea to the course

One is barely able to peruse the variety of offers of Internet-based learning, and not a few of the offers promise the perfect solution. We prefer to use open source tools like WordPress, Typo3, Moodle, Open Meetings & BigBlueButton, web-based options prepared creatively with complex learning content and that can be given to a discerning clientele. This is particularly interesting for adult education centres because they can be implemented worldwide at many colleges and universities. During the presentation, you can log in with your device and try it all – live! Bring your questions about web-based learning and we’ll try them out with practical examples. What remains unanswered can be cleared up together later in the webinar.

We’ll do this together! New cooperation opportunities with ELW using the example of the online writing workshop

A writing workshop that takes place exclusively online – can this work, and if so, how? It works! The “how” is presented by the VHS colleagues from Cologne, Karlsruhe and Straubing. Three adult education centres in cooperation work on experiences and agreements asynchronously (Moodle) and synchronously (Adobe Connect) by tapping into new audiences. How does it work? Content flow, experiences and resulting conceptual changes. The credo of the cooperation partners is: Mimicking is highly recommended!

The i-Treasures Project

The i-Treasures Project

In the i-Treasures project the promotion of digital skills among the elderly is the central focus, so as to ensure their active participation in the social life of the modern information society. The key element is a learning platform known as Treasure Hunt, which is constructed and designed to be attractive for learning. The i-Treasures (http://i-treasures.eu/) topics are closely related to the daily lives of seniors, such as shopping on the Internet, writing emails and online banking.

iMOOC – My digital I

iMOOC – My digital I

In the meantime, almost 1,900 people have participated in the iMOOC. iMOOC is the acronym for Massive Open Online Course. This MOOC is called “My digital I”, probably the biggest VHS course of all time and winner of the OER Award 2016. It is an online course in collaboration with more than 30 adult education centres in the German-speaking countries. Even today, 1 year after the end of the 4-week course, interested people still sign in on the www.ichmooc.de site. Nina Oberländer and Joachim Sucker, the two presenters of the MOOC, show some course examples and are available to answer questions. Will an updated course perhaps result from these conversations?
